The Fort Gratiot Planning Commission is made up of seven members, who, according to statute, must be representative of important segments of the community, such as the economic, governmental, educational, and social development of the local unit of government, in accordance with the major interests as they exist in the local unit of government, such as agriculture, natural resources, recreation, education, public health, government, transportation, industry, and commerce. The membership must also be representative of the entire geography of the local unit of government to the extent practicable.

Members of a Planning Commission must be qualified electors of the township, except one planning commission member may be individual who is not a qualified elector. To be a qualified elector, a person must be 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and have lived in the township at least 30 days. Property ownership is not required.

One member of the township Board shall be an ex officio member of the Planning Commission (currently Clerk Robert Crawford.) The Supervisor cannot serve on the Planning Commission because of the Supervisor’s appointment authority (Attorney General Opinion 6834 of 1995).

All members of the Planning Commission shall be appointed by the township Supervisor with the approval of the township Board, for a term of 3 years with the exception of the ex officio member, whose term expires with his or her term on the township board, or when an appointment is made to complete a vacated term.

The Planning Commission reviews all and has the authority to approve site plans, special land use requests, and reviews and makes recommendations to the Fort Gratiot Board of Trustees regarding new or amended zoning ordinances and the Five Year Master Plan. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Fort Gratiot Municipal Center. Commissioners are compensated $50.00 per attended meeting and attended training courses. Planning Commission agenda packets are typically emailed the Friday before the meeting. Occasionally, special meetings and work sessions are necessary. Work sessions are generally held the night of the regular meeting beginning at or after 6:00 PM. A commissioner/member may be removed if 6 meetings are missed (total, not consecutive) within 12 consecutive months. Members are expected to review all of the agenda items prior to the meeting, preferably by the Monday before the meeting in case there is additional information that needs to be gathered prior to the meeting. Thorough review of the agenda packet enables staff and petitioners a sufficient amount of time to address any concerns a member has during business hours prior to the meeting. Training opportunities are available and encouraged for new and existing members throughout the year. Cost, meals, and mileage are paid in advance and/or reimbursed.

The term dates are from the date of the appointment through December 31, 2019. Any person interested in being considered for an appointment to the Planning Commission must submit a letter of interest to Supervisor Jorja Baldwin by mail to or drop off at 3720 Keewahdin Road, Fort Gratiot, Michigan 48059, or by email to [email protected] Letters/emails of interest must be received no later than Friday, February 1, 2019 at 4:00 PM to be considered. The appointments will be made no later than the Wednesday February 6, 2019 Board of Trustees meeting.
