JOB TITLE:  TREASURER ACCOUNT CLERK / CASHIER
*FLSA:  NON-EXEMPT
SUPERVISED BY: TOWNSHIP TREASURER
SUPERVISES:  N/A

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the Supervision of the Township Treasurer, processes all payments made out to the township and all monies will be collected, posted, and balanced.  Assist the general public over the telephone or in the office with questions and conflicts relating to taxes or utility bills.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Serves as cashier for the Township, accepting receipts for taxes, utility bills and other money due to the Township, such as building, electrical and plumbing permit fees. Maintains other records related to assessments, taxes and utility bills.
  • Balances money received daily to distribution reports and makes cash transmittal reports. Prepares reports for Treasury bank deposits.
  • Process tax and utility payments received by crediting the taxpayers account and preparing a receipt, enters data into computer.
  • Manages special assessment rolls and assists with billing.
  • Handles title search requests and questions regarding all assessments and pay-off.
  • Assists public by answering general questions about utility services, taxes and assessments, either in person or by written correspondence.
  • Assists walk-in visitors by directing them to the appropriate office or staff member, distributing forms, receiving payments and providing information or instructions. Ascertains needs, explains departmental policies and procedures and initiates necessary paperwork.
  • Covers for receptionist.
  • Data entry, run printouts and generate required reports. Check reports against all accounts posted daily to assure accuracy, making corrections and changes, as needed.
  • Assists with tax bill preparation.
  • Maintains Pointe Community Center scheduling.
  • Performs various clerical functions, such as filing, typing forms and letters and operating office machines.
  • Performs the duties of other Treasurer’s Office personnel, as workloads, temporary absences or emergencies dictate.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of high school diploma or the equivalent, with some courses taken in accounting, bookkeeping or related subjects.  A minimum of one to three years of related and progressively more responsible account keeping experience, preferably in a municipal treasurer’s office setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, and email programs preferred; experience with BSA Software or similar programs desirable, but not required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Prior to starting employment, the candidate must complete a satisfactory background check.  The background check is understood to encompass all forms of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to: drug screen, physical, criminal background, driving record, sex offender registry, education, training and licensing verification, employment history, credit check, and professional and personal references.
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license throughout employment in this position.

  • Sit, bend, stoop, crouch, crawl and kneel in an ergonomically correct manner.
  • Stand and walk, climb stairs.
  • Normal office hours are from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
  • Generally works in a normal office environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate with many interruptions.
